In the 50's, Bud Shank and Bill Perkins recorded an album with a great
rhythm section that included Hampton Hawes in piano. One of the tunes was
a modern and very rhythmic version of Royal Garden Blues where the breaks
were shared by the two sax men, Hampton and the bass player. I was still
playing some modern gigs then but was transgressing to Dixieland and
loved that particular cut.
