My 2 cents is that:
1) Tenor can substitute for Trombone if necessary and/or
2) Tenor can along with a trombone and/or
3) Tenor (or Soprano) can substitute for trumpet and play the lead.
It is done frequently. For a real treat, listen to Bud Freeman on tenor with
various bands. He left a huge legacy of how it was done, since he learned to
play Dixieland in a six piece band that had no trombone. And then in other
esoteric bands like Joe Venuti's Blue Six (check out that band make-up)
And didn't he play with "The World's Greatest Jazz Band"? And with Valve
trombone Brad Gowens and Clarinetist Pee Wee Russell in some Condon's groups
in the 1940s?
Coleman Hawkins also left a Dixieland legacy, although the media called it
small band swing. :-) VBG.
Dixieland Rules for instrumentation? Perhaps Rule #1 Should Be:
1) There are no rules that cannot be broken by musicianeers.
Cheers,
Steve Barbone
