[Dixielandjazz] Thought process--trad/bop

Interesting question. I play bass, so there's not much difference in the way I play for either one. I didn't knowthere was anything except dixie till I was in my mid 20's or so, but my horizons have broadened since then. (It was a long time ago).
BTW, I'm a bass player.

Most of the of the mainstream groups play 2 beat straight melody on the first chorus, then go to swinging 4/4 and stay there for the rest of the tune. They also play a lot of show tunes in modern style ie. All the things you Are, So Nice to Come Home To, etc. For bass solos, I play a melodic line with just the drummer. No Stop time!!! I don't play walking on solos unless it's just too fast for anything else, and that's rare. I don't like to solo at all on anything that's too slow.....I have trouble staying awake....so does the audience.

For the dixie groups I may decide to go to 4/4, or stay in 2....it depends on the tune and the tempo. Dixie groups and the mainstream groups usually play different tunes, so the mood is already set by the tune and the other players in the band, and it's easy to just follow the mood. For solos, the same as above applies.

A question to those who play both trad and bop.
When in a bop oriented session, is there any particular thought process
that you are conscious of that keeps you in the stylistic mode of the moment?
Same question for the trad session.
