On July 4th 1970, which at the time was thought to be Louis Armstrong's 70th
birthday, a media-orientert birthday party was held at Newport. There were a
lot of trumpet players there, including Dizzie Gillespie, who did a passable
imitation of Louis' singing and playing on "I'm Confessin' " and "Ain't
Misbehavin' ".
Not having an isolating transformer I recorded the party on a R2R recorder
using a microphone in front of the TV loudspeaker. The quality leaves a lot
to be desired, but I did manage to capture the atmosphere of the occasion.
Cheers
Bob Smith
