works for me,

Sounds like a perfectly good way to carry on a terrorist instrument to 
me,  without the round part visible nobody would recognize a banjo as 
being any more potentially dangerous than a box cutter.  :))

Now how the Hell do they classify a Washboard ???  can you carry one of 
those on board  without a security clearance document ??

Not to even mention a double belled Euphonium  !!!

And yes I do check my drums every time and have never lost them yet.

    My good friend Franny Smith takes the neck off his banjo when he has 
to fly, puts the pot in his suitcase and takes the neck as carry on, 
asking the attendant to put it in the cabinet where they hang their 
garment bags. They have always been happy to oblige, so far as I know. 
It's an alternative.
