For those worried about whether or not it is proper to use horns in a rag, remember the first rule: "There are no rules"

Somewhere is my stack of old, unplayed of late, 78's is an old off
brand recording of Maple Leaf Rag by Doc Evans band. Well played and the
cornet lead was right on.
However, before you other responders all get warped out of shape over
the professor's remarks, remember it was his opinion, and just that,
opinion. Some of the comments made about him are getting a little
testy, or downright nasty. Remember that opinions are just that -- not
the gospel -- and like noses, everyone has one.
I find nothing wrong with horns in a rag performance if the arranger
has paid attention to the composer's intent. It's not like some "star"
singing the National Anthem at a sports game. Melodies, (remember
them?), as written by the composer, do count.
