>I've just had it confirmed that Ade Monsbourgh, the 'father' of Australian jazz died last Thursday, July 13th. A great musician, composer and mentor for following generations of Australian jazz musicians, he was responsible for introducing the recorder into school music curriculae and popularised jazz as an art form with his unique interpretations on all sorts of instruments, including the recorder, valve trombone and plastic tenor sax. His clarinet style was also unique, some likening him to Pee Wee Russell. He'll be sadly missed. More details when they come to hand, but he lived a rather reclusive life in far off country town, Nathalia in Northern Victoria, in the last few of his 89 years. He leaves behind a rich legacy of recordings.

Truly sad news for me -- and for all who knew and loved Ade. I was happy
to have met him, played some sessions with him on a stateside tour, and
even was "adopted" by him at Sacramento -- he gave me his blue beret
which a still have, calling it my "inheritence." I have many of his
recordings from over the years. A good player he wqs, and a delighful
and charming man. Considering the energy he put into his playing, I
never could understand why he was called "Lazy Ade."
I add my own feelings of shared sorrow, but I shall keep him in my
happy thoughts in years ahead each time I play one of his wickedly
wonderful rompers.
Take a well earned "five," Ade, and I'll see you later somewhere down
the road.
