I've just had it confirmed that Ade Monsbourgh, the 'father' of Australian jazz died last Thursday, July 13th. A great musician, composer and mentor for following generations of Australian jazz musicians, he was responsible for introducing the recorder into school music curriculae and popularised jazz as an art form with his unique interpretations on all sorts of instruments, including the recorder, valve trombone and plastic tenor sax. His clarinet style was also unique, some likening him to Pee Wee Russell. He'll be sadly missed. More details when they come to hand, but he lived a rather reclusive life in far off country town, Nathalia in Northern Victoria, in the last few of his 89 years. He leaves behind a rich legacy of recordings.
Regards,
Sam Meerkin
