[Dixielandjazz] Songs we hate

Six months ago I asked Randy Reinhart what he wanted to play on a gig where
he was subbing for our regular guy. "What songs do you like" I asked. Said
Randy: "I hate em all."

Me? I can't think of any I don't like except a few obscure ones which as
Steve Heist pointed out may not have been any good the first time around.
Can't remember their names right now, just that they didn't go any where.

Bob Romans, you hate Indiana? Darn, I love it in any key. Never gets boring,
especially if you are playing the Charlie Parker version. :-) VBG

As an ear trained player first and reading player second, who rarely looks
at chord charts or lead lines (except for obscure tunes that don't go
anywhere), I think the possibilities for improvisation on any song which has
more than three or four chords are unlimited.

Not only that, but those smooth jazzers can do some dazzling tricks with one
chord. :-) VBG (Actually, some of that is pretty damn good)

Oh yes, I do hate songs which are note for note copies of some dead guy's
performance 50 years ago. (including the solos as opposed to what Peplowski
is doing) To me, that is a form of musical necrophilia and not jazz. Just an
opinion so spare me the cards and letters.

Cheers,
Steve
