Jim, I think you're looking at the wrong bit. The numbers Craig is on about
are those you can see in bars 18 & 19 of the chorus. I don't think they
relate to chord position. I've never some across this notation before, but
suspect Craig's description is correct.

Ok!  The 3 or the 5 written in those bars refers to the bass, and that he
should play the 3rd of the 5th of that chord.  That's what it says in the
introduction of the book one.  At least, I think that's what it says, as
it's all in French!   :>
