Tis no doubt the beginning of the separation of Entertainers from
musicians>>
Hi
Its `horses for courses`. Some great musicians just didn`t have the magic
that made their bands front line entertainers. Just look at the Glen Miller
Band.
His American Band of the AEF as it was known over here was tops in every
department, probably the best Swing/Dance band ever, but when Millers plane
got bombed in the English Channel in 1944 and he died it all changed.
Not immediately but in a very short time. In spite of having the same
personnel, the band under Ray McKinley and Jerry Gray found just playing
the notes was not enough.
Many musicians who thought they could lead bands found that it didn`t work.
They perhaps were not tough enough. With their band members or their agents.
Teagarden for instance soon retreated from the rigours of being leader of
his own band to the comparatively easier life in the trenches.
We shouldn`t sit around, moaning about the inequities of life. Many a
brilliant guy in the back row turning out the hot licks couldn`t do the
`star` bit to save his life. Just accept it and do what you can. I will help
Kenny G carry his money to the bank any day. Musical integrity sounds great
but it doesn`t put food on the table.
Happy New Year everyone
Pat
