Bill,
I have an iPod (and my kids, God bless 'em, favored me this Christmas, with the Bose speaker system
through which I can play it at home without earphones,
As for the legit sites, you can search for 20s-30s tunes and artists and will get the indication
that they can be found, but frequently will find that they have the cover, the
description of the CD, but will many times not actually have the tracks to download.

Although I must admit that I have spent quite a bit of money getting what they DO have.
I find the a site called emusic.com frequently has more than do iTunes and the Musicmatch site.

So, for a lot of songs you still need to resort to reading your lps, cds and/or 78s and tapes
into your computer, turning them into the proper format and loading them into your iPod or
whatever other magical marvel you have purchased.

I've gotten a fair number of things off of redhotjazz.com and other "streaming" but it takes time
as you essentially have to record it as it plays instead of actually downloading it in the same sense
as the mp3 and other sites. It would be nice if Scott Alexander would set up a legit download for a fee
site as the big companies do not have the $$ incentive to do it as completely as you and I would like.

I may have some on my machine that you would like, but I don't have a database as such to
ship so that you can see what I have.
There are other sites that stream playable music which can be 'ripped" if you know how.
Again, I don't at the moment have these in a form to list them handily.
Maybe I can gradually get that organized. 'Twill take time.
