Dear Andy,
Many, many years, during my 23 year-long stint with radio 2MBS FM I played
the original 1934 version of  "I Can't Dance, I've Got Ants In My Pants" by
Clarence Williams Orch and fell, automatically, into the darnce
pronunciation.
It sounded so stupid, I immediately countered with "Which is hard to say if
you come from Melbourne."
I live in Sydney, but was born and bred in the conservative rival southern
city of Melbourne.
