"Maria Elena" was also recorded by Bunk Johnson and his Band on his last
session at Christmas 1947 in New York City just before one of the worst, if
not the worst, blizzards of the 20th century. Harold Drob booked the small
Carnegie Recital Hall because of its 'live' acoustic properties so that it
would sound like a dance hall. Bunk maintained that jazz should be played
strictly for dancing. The band (that Bunk himself had recruited) were
grouped on the stage and were recorded using just one microphone placed at
the centre of the balcony.
The band consisted of:
Bunk Johnson (tpt), Ed Cuffee (tbn), Garvin Bushell (clt), Don Kirkpatrick
(p), Danny Barker (g), Wellman Braud (bs), and Alphonse Steele (d).
Cheers
Bob Smith
