Not about CDs, but definitely about money:

One of my favorite reminders to the audience that its involvement in the 
financial support of the band is integral, was from Bo Grumpus, during 
their run at the Uptown Cafe in San Carlos, CA, back in the mid- to 
late-90s, by their "taking an offering" by passing the tip jar a few 
times throughout the evening.  It came back fairly full each time...,
