Hearing, or in this case, reading those comments just after having posted
about the obviously marvelous talents of film star Kevin Stacey (actory,
singer, dancer), and having seen other film stars in monstrously talented
showcases in the last week of musicals coming by way of the U.K. Sky Movies
into my home, makes me wonder if we all live in the same world.
We don't. You live in Spain.
Also, all generalities are false, including mine and this one. Of course,
you will always find A gem amongst all the garbage . . . but ONE doesn't a genre
make.
Hollywood is so out of touch with the real America, and they wonder why
movies grosses are down . . . and TV ratings are in the toilet. Take the TV
program "Book Of Daniel" just as an example. I don't know about Spain, but in this
country, a VAST majority 75-85% of Americans believe in God. So this
particular network, thought it would find an audience for a show that portrayed
Jesus in a totally non-biblical way with a Priest that had just about as
dysfunctional family and life as possible. The show lasted 3 episode and they
canceled.
Did they learn from their error? How's this for an encore: They took a show
that is one big gay joke from top to bottom, and to gain big ratings in this
God believing country, decided to cast, in the role of a conservative
Christian, none other than Brittany Spears as the host of a cooking show called
"Cruci-fixin's" . . . all in the attempt to mock what 85% of this country
believes, If 85% of the potential audience doesn't find the humor or point in that .
. . why do they put it up there to gain in the ratings? Are they really that
stupid?
How about "Broke Back Mountain"? Taking a movie that the VAST majority of
America has no desire to see whatsoever, and going WAY out of your way to
promote it as the greatest movie ever in all the awards and kudos rags imaginable
. . . all with the real intent of imposing values and social change to fit a
minority.
The IS only one answer: these guys are just plain out-of-touch with
mainstream America.
Now, I'm talking movies here, because you singled out that portion of my
writing, but this very same principle applies to the rest of our culture and
music, in particular.
One only has to watch for a very short time MTV, VH1, BET or the Comedy
Channel to see exactly what I am saying. They only way to gain superior ratings
in these areas is to become more shocking and outrageous than what went before.
And that type of challenge does NOT require talent . . . only guts.
What is fed to America via the media is what is brought up in America. If
young people continually view and hear displays of no talent, then that's all
they know.
And I don't care how many school music books you develop, or how many music
programs you put into the school . . . if that's not what they see outside the
school, then it's about as relevant as learning french, ancient history, or
chemistry to most of them.
