Regarding the name of a 6-string banjo (basically a guitar style neck attached to a banjo pot assembly), the are generally called banjos.

One can purchase them today from several sources, including "Musician's Friend" by mail-order. www.musiciansfriend.com 

I believe Deering Banjos in California still manufactures them. There are probably other manufacturers also.

Clancy Hayes played a 6-string banjo, and some rock bands use them in special arrangements.
