Jay McShann, who died in Kansas City on Thursday aged 90, was a pianist and
bandleader whose style epitomised the blues-inflected jazz of the
south-western United States in general and Kansas City in particular; in his
early days his band was regarded as a potential rival to Count Basie's, and
it was as a member of it that the 20-year-old Charlie Parker made his
recording debut.
