Ever since MTV, people in the US listen to music with their eyes.

John, I don't know if you are one of us "on the stage", or part of an
audience, but those of us on the stage know darn well that you have to grab
your audience with their eyes first.  The ears, hopefully, follow the eyes.

It's not just a new thing caused by MTV, nor is it just the U.S.  It's a
people thing! 
"Entertaining" is not really a bad word.
