[Dixielandjazz] It's a brass thing...

Hi, I've been away (Washington & California) for a few weeks, but just got
back on DJML in time to see the end of a discussion over the high notes that
Maynard played. I foresaw that sort of discussion on DJML just as soon as I
read of his death.
If you are a brass player, you will immediately know that those notes are
exciting because they are THERE! Sort of like the mountain climber's thing,
this is a "brass man's thing"! Having good chops and being able to reach
any note you can hear in your head is a goal. Maynard's talent was very
special, and very few can do the same. The Kenton Band, with it's solid
foundation
(I saw them once using tuba, bass trombones, bass & bari saxes), allowed
this amazing man to soar all the way to the top. So very exciting! Hair
raised on back of neck stuff!
Pat. You know I always respect your views, but on this one, I just must say
"it's a brass man's thing". It's like trying to tell a "man's joke" to
ladies. They just don't get it.
Jim
