[Dixielandjazz] Another nail in the coffin of consumer choice

Tower Records was a major force in music for many years because it was able
to stay ahead in marketing and promotions. However, with the coming of the
internet as a marketing force, the iPod and other mp3 portable players, the
climate has changed and Tower either didn't see these changes or refused to
incorporate them into its business practices. The same thing has occurred in
the auto industry.

It remains to be seen whether or not Tower can adjust to the new realities
of music marketing or not. Filing for Chapter 11 gives buys them a short
lease on life. If Tower's management can make the transition to a revised
business plan, they may still be around.

> Tower records is one of the few record stores left where a person can go
and buy a CD of something other than Top-40.

> Tower Records has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection from its
creditors, its second such filing in less than three years. The company,
which operates 89 stores in 20 states, sought bankruptcy protection Sunday
to sell its assets through a court-supervised auction. The Sacramento-based
company, formally known as MTS Inc., asked the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in
Wilmington, Del., to approve the rules governing an auction slated for Oct.
5. Tower said it needs to close the sale by mid-October so it has time to
prepare for the holiday shopping season, when it records about 32 percent of
its annual sales.
