Yes, Steve, I've played a slide trumpet. In theory, it's the perfect trumpet 
because you can get almost every note in tune, something you can't do with a 
valve trumpet. In practice, however, real life is a different story. The 
intervals on the slide are so close together that you almost need a 
micrometer to place the slide correctly. From the open position to the first 
position is a touch more than 1½ inches (equivalent to pushing the second 
valve down on a conventional trumpet).

It's good fun to play such an instrument, especially for a trombonist, but 
you will need a lot of practice to play it perfectly.
