[Dixielandjazz] Check out YouTube - Red Nichols feature

Depending on when the film was made, it could simply be a case of their
using a playback of the audio with the band going through the motions. In
the late '20s music in movies was recording live directly onto the film's
soundtrack, but sometime by the early '30s, all music was recorded in
advance and the performers filmed later. Not sure what was going on in this
one, though.

I had seen this before and noticed the same thing. I'm guessing it was one
or both horn players who came out from behind the curtains for one number.
Weren't Red's bands usually bigger than the one on stage? The name Leo
McConville* comes to mind as one of the trumpet players Red used a lot.

Ron L
* I'm not sure if that is spelled correctly and I don't have time to look it
up at the moment.

Interesting video. Did you notice that 6:13 into the video Red takes his
horn out of his mouth and it continues to play without him? The clarinet
player looks like Benny Goodman although the clarinet solo "Nobody's
Sweetheart" sounds like Pee Wee Russell.

My guess is that the recording and the film were made at different times.
