The monthly Jazz Sunday get together of the Sacramento Traditional Jazz
Society will take place this Sunday, August 13, at the usual place, The
Dante Club, 2330 Fair Oaks Blvd., Sacramento.

The Dante Club is located between Howe and Watt Ave. There is plenty of
overflow parking next door at MacDonald's.

It all begins at noon and goes until 5:00 PM on three stages and the public
is welcome.

Special guest will be Greg Varlotta.

Aug. 13: Side Street Strutter
(and hoofer!) Greg Varlotta
Any of you who have ventured up to Jazz Camp in the beautiful
surroundings of Sly Park have come to know Greg Varlotta as that
good-looking, fun-loving camp instructor that you're just hoping to see
break into a tap dance in the middle of a performance.

Not only can he dance, this multi-talented performer is an accomplished
trumpet and trombone player who also enjoys singing, playing banjo, piano,
guitar, tuba, and slide trumpet. (And hey, he's even good with computers
and music technology-programming synthesizers, composing and arranging
music. Such diversity!)

A recipient of the prestigious Arion Trumpet Award, Greg has spent his
entire life making music. At age five-inspired by his trumpet-playing
father-Greg learned to play the cornet by following along with recordings of
Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass.

By age 16, Greg was a member of the local musicians' union and was
playing casual gigs alongside his father. Soon Greg was awarded a full music
scholarship at Arizona State University, where he graduated with a
bachelor's degree in music performance in 1985.
It was at ASU that Greg became a founding member of the Side Street
Strutters Jazz Band in 1983. The following year, the band won the National
Collegiate Jazz Band competition sponsored by the Southern Comfort
Corporation, which ushered the group on a 2-week nationwide tour.

One stop on the tour was Disneyland in California, where the group was
offered a full-time position in 1985. To this day, the Strutters are still
the house jazz band at Disneyland, where they perform 5 days a week at the
French Market Restaurant in New Orleans Square.

The Side Street Strutters have also maintained a busy touring schedule
performing in Europe, Canada, Mexico, and have played at the White House for
former presidents Ronald Reagan and George Bush.

The group just released
their 8th CD entitled Back to Bourbon Street.

In 2001, Greg joined the faculty of the Sacramento Traditional Jazz
Society's Jazz Camp in Sly Park as trombone instructor, fulfilling his
aspirations to share his musical knowledge with young musicians.

An All-Star youth group led by will open the Main Stage at noon. Greg with
some of Sacramento's best musicians play the 2nd and 4th sets, 1:00 and 3:00
PM.

The 3rd and 5th sets will be scheduled jam sets with more of Sacramento's
finest.

The Le Cabaret and Tailgate rooms will also be jumping with bands playing,
noon - 5:00 PM.

 The public is welcome:
