[Dixielandjazz] Vappie's King Oliver CD.

I have the CD and I think Don Vappie did a great job with not only
transcribing King Oliver's recordings but re-recoding them as well with
his "Creole Jazz Serenaders"

Here is a clip from an interview I did with Don 6 years ago about the
recordings for Jazz Banjo Magazine:

JBM: Were there any changes you made to the actual recordings?

Don: There was one instance I remember where someone made a big issue
about one note that they thought was flat. Robert called me and I said
yes it probably is flat because the person listened to played a Bb and I
wrote an A. I didn't like the sound of the dominant 7 on top of the
chord that was being played at that time. That 7th didn't match with
what the rest of the band was playing so I wrote the note as an A which
was the 6th of the chord. To me it sounded better.

JBM: Did it sound correct in the final recording?

Don: Yes, You can't tell unless your one of these purist acting as the
"Jazz Police". If you are performing and an emotional thing happens
where the clarinetist wants to play something different I'm not going to
be upset. Robert Parker's purpose for doing the recording was to
capture the essence of the King Oliver Creole jazz band sound. For me
that meant writing down what they played and capture that spirit. If
you write something down and it sounds foreign to you then you can't
really force it.

Subject: [Dixielandjazz] Vappie's King Oliver CD.

Does anyone else out there own, and consequently have an opinion, on
Vappie's "In Search of King Oliver" CD? I'm in the process of archiving

Robert Parker's 2-hr radio broadcast on the subject, and wonder if
there's anyone else out there as excited as I am by Vappie's achievement

(& I don't get excited about much, I'll clue ya!)?,
