Listmates: here's an update on New Orleans clarinetist Jack Maheu. It was
sent by his good friend and fellow clarinetist Tim Laughlin. Tim reported
also that Jack and Pet Fountain had conversed by telephone.

In case you missed previous posts, Jack had a stroke, but got appropriate
medical treatment in time significantly to lessen its severity.

Tim Laughlin wrote:

Connie Jones and I went to see Jack last week at the rehab hospital. He was
sitting reading the newspaper, but a bit tired from the medication. We sat
and talked for about 45 mins. I saw what looked like a finished chess game
on the side, so I assume he's been kicking some butt. I brought him some
soft reeds to help get his chops back. He's expected to go home on Wed.
That should pick him up a bit. Pete Fountain told me he called him and had a
nice chat. I'm sure trading war stories was on the list.

He won't be ready for French Quarter Fest...unfortunately. He, like a lot of
us really looked forward to that gig. His "Fire in the Pet Shop Jazz Band"
will surely be missed.
