Don Goldie did commit suicide. He didn't lose a leg, but he did have some
toes amputated and he was wheelchair-bound and terribly depressed because he'd
gone from having several bands gigging around town to not playing at all. He
was a very complex man and was terrifically insecure in spite of his talent.
He was a good friend to The Mississippi Rag over the years--very
supportive--and both my sister, Jody, and I enjoyed some lengthy conversations with him.
He loved to talk about his early days in the music and about his dad's career.
He was very close to his mother and was devastated when she died. We felt
terrible when we heard that he had shot himself. I knew he'd been depressed for
some time, but it was still a big surprise when he died.

Years later we heard that Goldie was suffering from the ravages of diabetes
including the loss of a leg and had committed suicide. I've never seen
this confirmed. There is a short biography and discography in the following
website http://www.univox.com/radio/goldie.html#discog. It gives his years as
1930 to 1995. It does not state the cause of death.
