"Recording can take place on any CD-R/RW THAT IS NOT FOR COMPUTER USE". What's
that supposed to mean? I thought a CDR was a CDR. I know there were so called
blank "music CD's", but I thought that was a marketing gimmick.<

Dear Don,
No gimmick!
There are special audio only recordable CDs for these stand-alone CD
burners.
I know.
I had a Philips and now have a Marantz unit.
Shop salesman will always insist that 'recordable' computer discs will work.
The won't!!!
The blanks I use are TDK XA80 CD-R Audio 80, Recordable For Music.
There is the standard 'compact disc' logo at the bottom RH corner of the
disc insert sheet with the words 'Recordable' and 'For Consumer' added.
The other day when I went to buy more CD blanks at Tandy, they had none. I
have a feeling that TDK may be phasing them out. If so, I will have to junk
my Marantz unit and work out how to use my Mac.

For transferring CD to CD, it is breeze. Select 'Make CD' then press
'Record' and it does - at 2:1 (ie: twice real time).
A minus about these stand-alone (non-computer) CD burners.
You have to put in the track marker manually, unless you are going to
re-edit on a computer. As someone mentioned earlier.
The silence necessary to trigger the track marker is too sensitive and the
surface noise on the LP is not silent enough to trigger it.
If it was, you could have a track divided into mini tracks every time the
band played an organised break in a tune.
When transferring LP to CD and making up CD compilations, I always do it to
a rewritable CD of the same type as the CD-R blanks. Twice the price too.
That way, if something goes wrong (and it will) you can at least erase the
problem track and start again.
Another thing about the dedicated audio-only discs.
The purchase price includes a royalty payment, which makes them dearer that
normal computer data CD-Rs.
However, (like composer royalties) I wonder is the money ever gets back to
the source.
Kind regards,
Bill.
