[Dixielandjazz] clean horn?

Hey Bob-
 
I read that non other than Bix Beiderbeck kept a "dirty" horn, hardly  ever 
cleaned it, and claimed it sounded "too hard" when he did. Bix was not  a 
"neat" person,. and his hygiene left something to be desired. At least that is  
what the guys who sat next to him at a gig said. 
 
Do you suppose a cruddy horn would play with a more "mellow"  tone?  Hmmmm--
