[Dixielandjazz] Hindustan

Just a couple of thoughts about Hindustan and why it is popular with
Dixieland Bands.

It was a popular tune in the genre of those "oriental" pop tunes of the 20s
and 30s. (China Boy, Chinatown, etc., etc.) Dozens of these "pseudo
oriental" tunes were written and they were very popular with audiences. The
audience in the USA was mesmerized by the inscrutable orient and the Tin Pan
Alley writers capitalized on them.

The Bob Cats version in 1939 was very popular.

It is a very easy tune to play and has plenty of forward momentum that can
be mantained by just about any level musician on the planet.

It swings almost by itself. To ruin it, the players must be incompetent.

Ergo, we all play it.

Cheers,
Steve Barbone
