I knew Smokey when he was working with Turk in SF at Earthquake magoons.  I 
used to play intermissions there.

Later, Smokey moved to Virginia City, NV where he worked with the great 
pianist Merle Koch (pronounced Cook) in Merle's club, The Silver Stope.
