Jim;

To make things simple, the first line is composed of the musicians who play
the music. The second line, on the other hand consists of the dancers and
marchers who follow the musicians (the first line).

Therefore, on the way to a funeral, the band does indeed play a dirge with
the second line walking behind. After the deceased has been laid to rest,
the band strikes up a joyous number and are followed by the mourners (second
line) who dance to celebrate the good life of the deceased.

If you're interested in more information, listen to Louis Armstrong's
recording "New Orleans Function" recorded April 26, 1950. It's on the Decca
CD "Louis Armstrong of New Orleans" - catalog MCAD 42328.

I would like something resembling that tradition when my ashes are scattered
to the four winds.
