[Dixielandjazz] Who to call to start a charity event

FOr my effort I just called the Red Cross this far.
Service clubs are also a place to start.
Here also we have the Canadian Legions and
you have your veterans associations. They have
an structure to get volunteers and locations.

They are taking donations of cash here at this point.
A concert of local jazz bands will be happening as we
get going. All the musicians are up for it.
And for the first time in my memory at no fee.

The need will not go away soon.

You just need to get on the phone. I do not thin
the "level" of your band is critical jut the offer to
help and give a focus where people can come and give.

Even if you start in a local church or whatever.

A lot of little bits can make a great big bit.

Even if it wasn't the home of OKOM these are people who need help

I need help. Our band would be interested in doing a benefit
for the New Orleans disaster.

We're not the biggest draw in the world, so I'd probably try to
get some of the other bands in our vicinity (Southern NH & ME) to cooperate.

However, my only contact with benefits in the past is with
my old band when we got calls asking us to play.

How do I go about starting the process - like getting the
recipient (Red Cross & Salv Army) involved
getting a venue,
getting the publicity
This is all new to me.
Thanks. I'll read the respoonses when I get back from my
day (actually evening) job.

Regards,
Craig Johnson

September 2, 2005 14:45:36 - CBS - NEW YORK, NY
Jazz Great Organizes Relief Effort

Wynton Marsalis performed a tribute for victims of Katrina today.

"I know so many people in the city and we are all so connected in New
Orleans. But we know we have a certain kind of spirit because we are blues
people." Wynton Marsalis

(CBS) America's artistic community is stepping forward to help raise money
for people suffering as a result of Hurricane Katrina.

Jazz great Wynton Marsalis, artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center in
New York City, is putting together a benefit concert.

Marsalis says it is heartbreaking to see the destruction and hopelessness in
his hometown.

"It's too much to describe
not just for me, but for New Orleaners all over
the world. I think I've gotten over 400-something calls in the last two
days," he says.

The calls come from friends who have been in New Orleans and describe a
desperate situation; other calls are from friends around the world offering
to help in any way they can.

Marsalis says his parents are fine, but no one there is really OK.

"I know so many people in the city and we are all so connected in New
Orleans," he says. "But we know we have a certain kind of spirit because we
are blues people.

"What we see going on now with the mayor having to call on the federal
government and things not getting there with a certain type of quickness ...
It's frustrating in lieu of the history
the way that the people we have
seen on the TV are treated."

Despite the devastation, Marsalis says he is not fearful that the city's
rich cultural history will be lost.

"We are like the soul of the country," he says. "We are the melting pot and
that's why we created jazz. Jazz is the object identification of democracy."

U.S. Rep. Dennis Hastert's (R-Ill.) said the city shouldn't be rebuilt.

"They are always people who have things to say," Marsalis says. "They can
say what they want, but this represents a challenge. If we can get to the
2005 intelligence with the social conscience of this time, we will make our
city much better."

Marsalis will be participating in a number of programs benefiting hurricane
relief, including a BET telethon scheduled for Friday, Sept. 9.

"Americans have been generous so far," he says. "What they need (the folks
who live in New Orleans) is money and support."

Shalom Jazz fans,

I returned home this morning from working in India for the last few weeks.
I'll be off to Los Angeles on Monday to attend my
daughter's wedding. Hope to see a few listmates there during my trip.

Last week I watched the news with horror as hurricane Katrina hit New
Orleans and other US gulf states, but I was unable to connect
with any news about DJMLers who live in the affected areas. Can someone let
me know on or off list how our list mates were affected
by the storm, and if we are doing anything to help their recovery?

When I return from California at the end of September, we will be going into
our holy day season in Israel. I hope to be offering
the services of my Doctor Jazz band for weddings, bar mitzvahs and other
occasions to the Jewish families who were deported from
their homes in Gaza. Will keep you posted if anything interesting comes from
our efforts.

Best regards to all,

Just out of interest, since there seems to be quite a demeaning manner on
DJML towards the collection agencies that handle musician's royalties:

Our recorded music forms 6.35% of the running time of this particular play
that is on now in the theaters. That means that each one of the "authors"
(we're 5 in the band & it was a joint effort) gets 1.27% of each ticket
sold. Money with a capital M would be if the show runs for years,
naturally.

We have as much info about the band on the theater program as the actual
play got! And, our name in huge signs hanging on the front of the
theater...just like your man who wrote the "Phantom of the Opera", etc. Not
a bad thing, if you ask me.

The Sociedad General de Autores y Editores (SGAE) takes about 15% of that
for having chased the money. Then the gov't taxes another 15%, so there's
not a lot left. This was the first payment we received, and two of our guys
who weren't already members & had to join the SGAE because of this at least
got the admission money back with the first payment! :>

Since I don't try to make a living out of this sort of thing, the money that
comes in is "just nice, thank you". I'm still collecting royalties for tv
ads I wrote & produced in the 1970's in Spain. Very little money, but it
all adds up.

As I said before....

Jim (not complaining) Kash

The foreign news about the tradgedy along the Gulf of Mexico seems to be
hitting hard on the fact that very little seemed to happen to help those
poor people during the last 4 days. If that news is just not slanted, then
it is quite unconceivable that aid couldn't have begun to move more quickly.

I've looked at Spanish tv & newspapers, Sky News (satellite tv, U.K.), CNN,
& Fox News, and they seem to all aim at the same theme. Can't get BBC
lately, as Sky bumped it off of their satellite viewing. Wonder if they're
hitting on the same theme?

Hard to believe.... I'm quite stunned.

Jim

This note is coming to you from Charlie's wife. I am writing to let
you know that Charlie passed away this morning at 6:15 a.m. His last
morning was very pleasant and normal, but he felt tired. He sent me
to get something for him from the car and when I returned, he had
slipped away to the next world. He died a quiet death at home in his
bed. I believe he left peacefully without suffering and is in God's
hands.

Please know that your e-mails and correspondence meant the world to
Charlie. He loved reading your notes and responding to them. Thank
you for the many wonderful words and friendship you provided him.

I for one will certainly miss him.

Sincerely and regretfully,
Lornetta Hooks

I enjoyed Charlie's frequent contributions to this list. He had the ability
to crystallize his ideas concisely and clearly.

Although I never heard him play, I bet that his clarinet playing was just
as
expressive as his messages to the group.

I will be playing for a church service this Sunday and will silently
dedicate my efforts to Charlie and also the tragedy in New Orleans and the
gulf
area.

Hopefully some day I will get to sit in the band that Charlie has joined in
the great beyond.

Sincerely and with Condolences to his family,

Bob Roman's sig line

"Because I play trumpet, I envy no one."

Brought to mind a trumpet player joke.

Q. How many trumpet players does it take to screw in a light bulb?

A. Five. One to screw in the bulb, four to stand around and say they could
do it better.

Very kind regards,

Several folks wanted more information regarding the auction of Dizzy's
estate, which occurs this September 14th. Here is the site with all of
the information. There are some incredible memories here. If I were a
wealthy person I would buy all of it and put it in a free traveling

With my taking up the clarinet, and me on the trumpet, we are about half of
a dixieland band. I'm sure this has been asked before hereabouts, but can
you recommend a couple of fake books or easy to medium instumental books
with the dixieland repetoire??

The foreign news about the tradgedy along the Gulf of Mexico seems to be
hitting hard on the fact that very little seemed to happen to help those
poor people during the last 4 days. If that news is just not slanted, then
it is quite unconceivable that aid couldn't have begun to move more
quickly.

Actually, this slant is closer to the truth than we white folk will want to
admit. When the Mayor of NO issued an "order" to evacuate the city prior
to
the hurricane's landfall, she did not plan for the poorest and most
vulnerable slice of society by arranging for the buses and ambulances to
haul them out
at the same time. Demographicaly, white folk are not the majority of the
poorest of our society. So when the mayor sent out the evacuation notice,
I'm
guessing the majority of cars heading out were white folk. They lost
everything too, but they stand the best chance of integrating themselves
into other
areas of the country and rebuilding their lives with time. We can easily
blame the people who stayed, for dragging their heels and not moving out
and
therefore subject to their own fickleness, but if they have no car, no
money,
and no idea where to go or be accepted, what could we have expected?

The discussion is just starting to open on why the Department of Homeland
Security wasn't more prepared to deal with the situation. FEMA is being
phased out to be taken over by DHS, but that is the only governmental
agency that
has the experience necessary to deal with rescue and clean up AFTER a
disaster. DHS is supposed to have the responsibility for anticipating
problems and
developing contingency plans. The possibility of this happening was
obvious
once Katrina exited Florida on its northwesternly path. The vulnerability
of
the Gulf region (especially New Orleans) has been well known for decades.
It was obvious to me when I visited New Orleans and watched boats on the
Mississippi floating along higher than many buildings. I think expecting
DHS to
do a better job than FEMA after a disaster is foolhardy. The debate will
be
intense on this one and could become the death knell to the present party in
power.

I interpret the foreign coverage to be honest reporting of the sad dilemma
we have created.

We've discussed jazz funerals at year's end. Here's another take:

My favorite "Pres",Lester, passed some time ago. If the current President
wanted to really help the folks in his country he could bring back the
troops from Iraq and let that country settle it's own affairs .The troops
could then assist in resolving the difficulties in N.O.

No doubt many will disagree but I have to speak my piece.

I have the greatest respect for the democratic process but fear that the
power of politics often overrides the will of the masses.

Bob Ringwald ,please forgive me if I have transgressed the code for DJML,
others have and I feel that the post that I am responding to, "Our Own Black
Hole", validates my response.

May all the problems in La. Ms. and Alabama. be over as soon as possible.

Glen Page.

hello list-

I see that political viewpoints are starting to creep into the New Orleans
discussions. This is unfortunate. There are some who feel that government
should rise to every occasion, like the victim briefly interviewed by the
TV news
who complained that he had run out of cigarettes.
I am reminded that the London authorities were unable to extract victims
for
several days, with a far smaller problem to deal with.

Looting and worse has broken out after every natural and man-made disaster.
Remember Watts some years ago? Some of this hindered the rescue efforts. I
recall reading of the looting problem in San Francisco many years ago that
was quickly ended when the police shot dead a few looters. We don't do
that
anymore.

There magnitude of the disaster was too great for the resources of the
city,
or even the state. Mobilization of national resources always takes a lot of
time. New Orleans was a disaster waiting to happen. Unfortunately there will
be others. I guess it is human nature to blame those in authority .
                                                                   tradjazz
