Regarding Ron L'Herault's comments about Jimmy Durante: "He did record but
not much if I remember correctly. He can be heard in an early Shirley
Temple movie I think and I saw him sing and play a bit of piano in a Buster
Keaton talkie not too long ago."
Dear Ron (and friends),
I won't get too involved with this thread (hooray, I hear you cheer) as
there is more than enough information available via Google.
A jazz bio, a record listing and recorded examples of the jazz bands he
played with can also be found on the indespensible Red Hot Jazz site.
Quite a few of the band titles (1919-1922) featuring him are currently
available on CD. I have details if required.
The Shirley Temple film was 'Little Miss Broadway' (1938) and Jimmy was cast
as Jimmy Clayton, leader of the Jazz Bandits.
The Buster Keaton film you recall could have been one of three made when MGM
teamed Durante and Keaton for commercial reasons. An unhappy partnership by
all accounts.
'The Passionate Plumber' (1932), 'Speak Easily' (1932) and 'What! No Beer?'
(1933).
Kind regards,
Bill.
