Well, as one of those theiving teenagers...All I can say is that I have burned CDs, but never by any living musicians (i.e. bands out performing today). When I see a really good live jazz band, I always buy a CD because I feel guilty not doing so (the musicians always seem to plead that the audience should buy a CD or two. Only $15!) Most of the stuff I burn is stuff that isn't available anywhere. I do my own little mix CD's with stuff off of my records, or from a number of different CD's that I've already bought and paid for. I also do some trafficking of rare old films. Like, I've got a copy of "The Big Broadcast of 1932" which I transferred to DVD, and I gave some copies of that to some other people. But that film was never commercially available! I mean, if they had a legal copy, I'd buy it, all of us with bootlegs would buy a legal copy simply because it would probably look and sound so much better.
Also, if I already own an LP of something...I see no reason to buy the CD of it, with the exact same tracks of it.
The really interesting thing I've noticed about CD burning...All the people around here(NE Ohio) who do it the most are musicians! My saxophone teacher burned CDs of Ellington stuff, and burned a copy of Joshua Redman's latest CD and gave them to me. He's a professional saxophonist, and here he is burning CDs. My brother's trumpet teacher does that too. Neither of these guys are teenagers, obviously...The saxist is in his 20s, and the trumpet teacher is over 70! My brother comes home with a new burned CD every week. It's just really odd. I'm in the pit band for "Beauty and the Beast" at my school, and the French Horn player burned a copy of the Broadway soundtrack CD and gave it to me. (Incidentally, the choir director would've loaned me one of his 2 copies of the CD.) It's just, I suppose, that people just sort of burn things without really thinking about it.
Don't worry, I don't think there's a burgeoning market in swapping trad jazz mp3's online. (I don't think you could find them anywhere if you tried.)
