Gala concerts are typically festive affairs offering fancy dinners for
select ticket buyers and lighter musical fare for the main portion of the
evening. Lincoln Center's Fall Gala concert on Wednesday night at Avery
Fisher Hall was another story.

Yes, there was a dinner for those paying top dollar ($1,000 or $1,500). But
the program offered the dramatic soprano Deborah Voigt and the heldentenor
