[Dixielandjazz] Circle of 5ths

Hello all

Dan Augustine and Tom Belmessieri have sorted this out very well but other
people's use of the clock analogy can still lead to some confusion with
regard to the existence of 4ths.

There are no 4ths when notes are considered. The clock analogy works by
starting with C at 12 o'clock and then ascending clockwise through G, D, A,
E and B to F# at 6 o'clock; then descending anticlockwise
(counterclockwise) from C at 12 o'clock through F, Bb, Eb, Ab and Db to Gb
at 6 o'clock. F# = Gb.

The interesting extension of this topic is its use in performance. Steve B
mentions the movement of chords in certain pieces - do any jazz performers
actually "circumnavigate" the circle of 5ths?

In classical music, the only examples of such "circumnavigation" that I
know of are the Opus 39 preludes of Beethoven.

All the best
Anton
