My big report (after playing three long sets with the California
Repercussions on Friday and Saturday to great audiences) was the thrill
of finally seeing Sac a Pulse (sorry, no accents) playing live! For
being "just" a 5 piece group from France without a trumpet I think they
were really quite great - the songs they played were outstanding and
the scat-singing soprano sax player was quite a hit with the audience!
Before the band started playing the people behind me were wondering if
they should stay for the performance - I told them that they might
possibly be seeing the best band of the weekend but they said - "what
about "Muggsy Remembered" or "Cornet Chop Suey" but I had to tell them
that they should stick around and see what happens. They did and
afterwards they were quite happy to do so.
On Saturday I had a brief exposure to Cornet Chop Suey - they were also
very good and a big crowd was thrilled, but the biggest response I
personally saw to any performance was Tom Rigney and Flambeau
Cajun/Zydeco band Friday night at the Freeway Garden doing the Orange
Blossom Special as a hot jazz/traditional country number - everybody in
the audience was really rocking by the time that song was over...
Trad? No ... but it was great music!
This was the first year I ever played at Cal Expo for the festival - I
can see why the RV'rs will not be too happy next year - I hope some
solution can be worked out soon...
anyway, it was a great weekend - I have performed in about 20
Sacramento Jazz Jubilees and been in the audience for most of the rest
and this was a particularly great year!
