Dear Rich,
Regarding your comment: >Try to catch the Kenny Ball JB version of High
Society from the 60's. TERRIFIC clarinet with bonus trpt/clar duet on a
couple of choruses!!! One of the best recordings of this tune, in my
opinion as a lowly piano player.<
Well! Well! Well!
Great minds think alike!

I was just about to mention this Kenny Ball version in connection with this
thread.
Recorded for Pye at a 5-6 May 1961 session, it features the traditional
clarinet 'bit' as a clt solo and an obligato, then goes like the clappers
for about 5 minutes and 10 choruses (including the last 2 over the front
line) of sheer inventiveness.
The clarinet player was Dave Jones and his wonderful 'solo' is one of the
hidden delights in my jazz collection.
And a lesson to all clarinetists who want to master this obligatory section
of Porter Steele's "High Society" (1901).
It was reissued a year or so back on Lake LACD114 (playing it now).
Worlds Records do not seem to have it in stock, but I bet DJMLer Jazz Jerry
does.
Kind regards,
Bill.
