Re the `delay` problem.
Of course it is due to the speed of sound in air.
If you have ever watched a movie of a long line of men marching to a leading band  you can actually see the sound wave as each man marches very slightly behind the step of the man in front of him.
Any sarn`t major worth his salt knows this and will give the order to halt when standing  in the centre of the line marching past. If he stands at one end of a long line the ripple effect of stamping boots sounds like a machine gun.
