Re: "I have NEVER heard an audience applaud at the end of a solo
passage in an instrumental concerto"...Has anyone ever heard of this
anomaly? A musician in the N.O. opera orchestra in the 50s said that,
when solo or soli parts are played particularly well, the musicians rub
their feet on the floor, producing a faint brushing sound that the
audience can't hear but is heard by the players. I hope it's a true
story and has been done elsewhere. If not, it ought to be.
