Thanks for the info. One can see a picture of this instrument, (cross
between a violin and a gramophone) plus some information about it at:

The violinist was playing a Stroh or phono fiddle violin. It was used in the
early days of recording [before they had microphones in the studios]. If you
search it on Google there will prob. be a few pieces written about it !
