Given the post Of Lilly K and others about the dearth of opportunities for
young jazz wannabes I suggest that:
Every band on the DJML make it a point to contact youngsters and give them
the opportunity to sit in with you.
Barbone Street does it on a regular basis. Young Players, Singers etc., are
welcome to sit in.
Some will be awful, but if your band is competent at all, you can cover for
them. And every once in a while you come across a Jonathan Russell, or some
other youngster who is absolutely wonderful and you can get paying gigs for
them.
Yeah, some sidemen may bitch about it, but then "What's New?"
They key to sustaining the interest in OKOM among the young is not only to
develop them but to make it PROFITABLE for them. If the music generates
income, they will want to continue playing it.
Cheers,
Steve Barbone
