NORMAN THATCHER'S JAZZ BAND

23 June 2005 - Clevedon Jazz Club

Norman Thatcher's Jazz Band is new to the Club although Norman himself is not. The band, which appears at Clevedon Jazz Club's regular Walton Park Hotel venue on Thursday 23 June, was formed in 1996 when Norman moved to South Wales. He had been leader of the Ken Colyer Trust Band at that time but, disillusioned with its musical content, decided that there was a yawning gap for an authentic New Orleans style band.

Norman collected together a number of like-minded musicians, all well versed in the idiom, and the band was born - forthright and dedicated in preserving the vintage New Orleans sound. Since then the band has played at major festivals and jazz clubs throughout Europe and has recorded a number of memorable CDs.

Norman on trumpet is a true multi-instrumentalist and has played with many great musicians such as Ken Colyer and Acker Bilk. He is in constant demand throughout Britain and Europe and visits New Orleans, the birthplace of jazz, regularly to play and record with local musicians.

The other band members, all chosen for their excellence and virtuosity, are Keith Box on clarinet who also played with Ken Colyers Jazzmen. He has played with many bands in the Bristol area and runs his own band.

Tom Whittingham features on trombone. Tom is well known to Club audiences not only on trombone but drums, washboard, tuba and the seldom heard Swanee whistle.

Sarah Thatcher plays Banjo. She began her musical career playing ragtime piano in a local pub with her brother. She later took up the banjo and now plays with several bands throughout Britain and Europe. Her melodic, uncluttered style and solid time keeping ensure that the other musicians have a sturdy anchor to optimise their natural virtuosity. Sarah has also played and recorded in New Orleans

Clarence Nugent at the drums is one of the leading New Orleans style drummers in the country. He has played with the Icon Jazzmen and the Adamant parade band for over 30 years. His subtle yet powerful driving style provides a momentum, which gives the band its authentic New Orleans sound.

John Massey on bass is a well-established bass player from Bristol; he has featured with a variety of top bands in the area. He is also an accomplished classical bass player.

The doors at Clevedon Jazz Club's Walton Park Hotel venue open at 8pm, the music starts at 8.30pm and its £6 'on the door'. Further details of this and all other Clevedon Jazz Club events, and Club membership - members get a substantial discount on admission charges! - are available from Trev on 0700 5806 252 or from the Club's web site at http://www.clevedonjazzclub.co.uk.
