Dear Bob,
Thank you for the posting regarding Kass Malone, as he was known when he
played string bass with the Jack Teagarden All-Stars in the mid 1950s.
We know all about JT and other jazz giants, but rarely get an insight into
the world of the sidemen.
What an interesting man Mr Malone was.
Fortunately, his stay with Big T is documented.
He joined the Teagarden All-Stars (JT, Charlie T, cltists Jay St John/Pud
Brown, pnist Sid Hurwitz & Ray Bauduc) just prior to the band's engagement
at the Blue Note in Chicago in April 1953, then (with Norma Tea on piano)
toured east to New York. More touring and back 'home' to the Hangover Club
in SF. The frontline changed a bit but the rhythm was the same for most of
the touring in 1954 and 1955. This particular group broke up in early 1956.
Recordings: I can't track down the sides Kazz Malone made for Columbia in
the 20s with Lowe Stokes & the Melody Men (any help here Anton Crouch?).
He made two Capitol titles with the Pee Wee Hunt band in July 1951.
The rest of his jazz stuff was with the Teagarden All-Stars including
Hangover Club broadcasts (March-April 1953), a broadcast from the Blue Note
in Chicago (April-May 1953), New York Decca sessions in Nov 1953 and Jan
1955, and the Hangover Club again in May 1955. Not much for well nearly
three years travelling all over the US.
I have some of the above.
Kind regards,
Bill.
