New Orleans is on the move, and continues to instigate things to help
the music community , Maybe it's time to go record our music in
Louisiana. ??

Tax Credits for Sound Recordings

Gov. Kathleen Blanco has signed Act No. 485 (formerly known as House
Bill 631) creating tax credits for making albums in Louisiana ? much
like the credits that have already been in place for making movies. The
new tax credits, which go into effect on January 1, 2006, provide an
incentive of cash back on 10-20 percent of the amount spent in
Louisiana on record production (not marketing or promotion).
Regulations and guidelines for implementing the new tax credits are
still being drafted. Stay tuned for more details. To read a copy of the

New Orleans Music in the New York Times

New Orleans-based roots-rocking singer-songwriter Shannon McNally got
a nice review in the July 10 New York Times for her new album
?Geronimo? (Back Porch). Rock critic Jon Pareles called the disc
?irresistible.?

A week later, jazz writer Ben Ratliff waxed poetic about pianist Tom
McDermott?s ?excellent? new album on STR Digital, ?Choro de Norte.? The
album, recorded in Brazil and New Orleans, is something of a master
work for the already acclaimed McDermott. It continues the exploration
of Latin-themed music that he began in 2002 with ?Danza,? his
collaboration with clarinetist Evan Christopher. Of the new album,
Ratliff wrote, ?Mr. McDermott?s ?Santa Teresa? and ?Lizinha,? with
their bewitching changes, suggest that he?s deep inside this style of
music; this is not some sort of dry re-creation.?

Kings, Presidents and Preservation Hall

President George W. Bush has held only four state dinners since taking
office in 2001. But the one on July 18 was a biggie, honoring Indian
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. And what all-American entertainment did
the president select to go along with the chilled asparagus soup and
pan-roasted halibut? New Orleans? own Preservation Hall Jazz Band.

From the White House, the band traveled directly to Thailand to
perform at the celebration marking the 61st anniversary of the reign of
that country?s King, Bhumipol Adulyadej. The king, also known as Rama
IX, was born in the United States and is known in local music circles
as a big fan of New Orleans jazz.
