Googled a bit for Janis and found the below web site:

Great write-up of Janis' musical history by the talented writer Jim Uhl
which was published in The Mississippi Rag a while back. Janis gives us some
really great insight on the music, Ory, Turk Murphy and others who both
influenced him and/or played with him.

It was the Beverly Caverns in LA where Janis heard/saw Ory. The band was,
Ory, Jimmie Noone, Mutt Carey, Bud Scott, Joe Darensbourg and Andrew
Blakeney.

Wish I'd been there.
