Oh, that...

Yes, well, I was trying to be funny myself when I claimed that as my
first record. It was actually recorded by a couple of characters named
Stan Boreson & Doug Setterberg, who also recorded an album called "I
Yust Go Nuts at Christmas."

I thought they would be well known -- they have been played on Dr.
Demento's radio show a few times -- but apparently my DJML post was the
only mention of "Oly Swenson, King of the Great North Woods" known to
Google. (Too bad we've destroyed a nice Google Whack.)

This opened up a flood of nostalgia for me: My grandfather, whose name
was Ken, introduced me to all of this stuff when I was still riding a
tricycle. I always called him Grandpa Ken, and any of you who lived in
St. Paul/Minneapolis in the early sixties will recognize that name as a
popular kid's show character. My grandfather drove me by a theatre
where Grandpa Ken was on the marquee. I didn't get wise to that little
stunt until just now!

I was watching another kid's show, "Lunch with Casey Jones," when they
broke in with news of the Kennedy assassination.

Memory is a funny thing.

Dear Paul,
You said, in reply to what I intended as a 'funny':
> Obviously a case of mistaken identity. It is truly bizarre that I
even know
what you're talking about but I will admit that my grandfather took
great
delight in introducing me to that tune circa '61. I was a very young
Minnesotan
back then.

Dear Paul,
It certainly may be a case of mistaken identity.
Sorry about that.
However, this is the entry which comes up when you Goggle "Oly Swenson,
King
of the Great North Woods".
It appears to have come from the DJML Digest.
Kind regards,
Bill.

What is it with you Minnesota guys? If you're going to steal something
and
then distribute to the general population, at least be sure the recipe
works
-- this ain't "hot dish."

Since my parents were native Minnesotans, I feel a certain
responsibility to
point out that this "Minnesota Virus" is a hoax, you betcha. In the real
one, you forward the virus first, THEN delete all the files on your hard
drive.
