[Dixielandjazz] Tailgait Party

[Jerry Gordon]

Before there were minivans, there were station wagons that had a rear
door called a tailgate, which could be dropped down to form a level
bench. This is often where people sat to enjoy the party described below,
hence the name.

While Hal is correct that the party has nothing to do with trombones per
se, the tailgate trombone style of playing derives its name from the
custom of seating trombonists at the rear of trucks carrying jazz bands
in parades.
