The Limehouse-Jazzband

27 January 2005 - Clevedon Jazz Club

To keep the New Year celebrations going for a few more hours, Clevedon Jazz Club are proudly introducing some special visitors from Holland to entertain the Club's audience at their Walton Park Hotel venue on 27 January. The Limehouse-Jazzband, who were founded in 1964, are on their first UK tour. They were originally formed in the Haarlem region, near Amsterdam, and have earned a very good reputation throughout Holland as the 'Traditional Small Big Band' playing authentic, acoustic music with enthusiasm and dedication to the original spirit of the period.

This ten piece band who specialise in the music of the 1920's and 30's, have seven successful albums to their credit. Their arrangements, many of which are their own, are focused on, and inspired by, the instrumentation of the Fletcher Henderson, Luis Russell and Bennie Moten bands.

When multi-instrumentalist and founder member, Fred Horn left the group, his leadership was taken up by Robert Duis who plays first cornet. He is complemented in the brass section by Louis Lanzing and Coen Gerritse who form an important counterweight to the clarinet and saxophones of Rob Radoux, Peter de Klerk and Alhard Zwart. The reed section provide the colour, sensitivity and reproduce the unique sounds created by the bands of the 20's and 30's. Finally the all important rhythm section is made up of Jan Gombert on piano, Wil van Schaik on banjo, Rob Elderhorst on sousaphone and "Benjamin" Jens Gombert at the drums.

The doors at Clevedon Jazz Club's Walton Park Hotel venue open at 8pm, the music starts at 8.30pm and its £6-50 'on the door'. Further details of this and all other Clevedon Jazz Club events, and Club membership - members get a substantial discount on admission charges! - are available from Trev on 0700 5806 252 or from the Club's web site.
